Is Dimock Water Safe To Drink?

Please donate to the Water for Dimock fund: j.mp On March 15th 2012 families affected by fracking in Dimock got test results back from the EPA proving their water was contaminated. The EPA simultaneously put out a statement saying the water didn’t pose a health threat. Why did the EPA contradict it’s own findings? Please call EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson at 202-564-4700 and demand long-term water replacement for Dimock. Water and People is a dynamic new high school course partnering students with water industry professionals and their community. Connecticut foresees 40% of their 1032 registered water operators retiring within the next five years. Water and People introduces students to water distribution, science, and safety, green initiatives and careers within the water industry. At the end of the course students have the opportunity to take the state exam to become a certified water operator. Water and People, developed by David Kuzminski, Seb Agostino and the Connecticut Section of the American Water Works Association, is the first course of its kind- garnering awards and support from the Environmental Protection Agency. To date, Water and People has certified 11 operators and is currently in its third year. In the summer of 201, the Water and People course was brought to New Haven,CT partnering with students at Common Ground High School. Local water provider, Regional Water Authority, hosted 10 students for a week long Water Boot Camp. The boot camp highlighted the importance of high quality drinking water and the increasingly acute need for people to maintain and operate water systems. Funding was provided by the Environmental Protection Agency, Connecticut Department of Public Health and The Connecticut Section of the American Water Works Association. This years World Water Day theme Clean Water for a Healthy World aims to raise awareness and spur action on improving water quality worldwide. A global event on water quality took place today in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, to mark the occasion. The event, organized by UN Water, brought together national and local government representatives, UN agencies, civil society, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, scientists, local and international media, and the general public including school children to discuss policy options and initiate action to improve water quality around the world.

Sergei Gusachenko reports: Today some regions of the world struggle for water resources. Some politicians fear that the 21st century will become the century of wars for water resources. Scientists of the majority of countries have been thinking how to save water for many years. Environmental Politics and Law (EVST 255) The lecture reviews water law in the United States, and highlights challenges inherent in regulating water quality. Aging water infrastructure, pesticide and herbicide application, and surface water runoff all pose challenges in maintaining a clean drinking water supply. The lecture covers pesticide management through the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The management of pesticides and herbicides in drinking water has been heavily influenced by the economic concerns of pesticide and herbicide users as well as the municipal water agencies charged with testing water regularly for regulated chemicals. Sabiha Khatoon collects clean water from a pump installed in her village by the NGO Concern, with funding from the UK.

Her village, in Pakistan’s Sindh Province, was devastated by the floods last year, with most of the mud (kichar) homes washed away and crops and livestock lost. People who lived in the village had to flee their homes when the flood waters arrived in the middle of the night, leaving everything behind and moving away to safer areas – some going to emergency tented camps and others going to stay with family in towns and cities across Sindh.

“In March we were approached by Concern about building a brick house for us. We had to show papers to prove the land was ours then they agreed to help build us a house. We are very happy about this because if Concern and DFID hadn’t helped us, we’d be in the hot sun in our tents.

“We also received fertilizer and seeds, and new hand pumps. Clean water means it is now easy to get clean drinking water and we can wash our clothes daily, and we can grow seeds given to us. We are growing sagar, we will make bread from it. We are very thankful to people in the UK for the help they gave us.”
