A few nice Hard Water Damage images I found:
Home sweet home – Artesanias Watakame – Artesania Huichol – Lazaro Cardenas No. 925 Col Emiliano Zapata, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico

There are a number of good books for sale which relate the story in a much better manner than this short version which I cobbled together.
Watakame’s Journey: The Story of the Great Flood and the New World
The flood and creation myth of the Huichol Indian people of Mexico is told through the brilliantly colored beaded or yarn paintings of shaman Guadalupe Lopez Bautista and other Huichol artists.
In the story a Huichol boy plays a role similar to Noah’s, though Watakame’s odyssey is more complex and magical.
The young boy was known for working hard for his own family as well as for other members of his community. He worked particularly hard one day clearing a tract of land with a particularly large and troublesome tree. Almost finished at dusk the young man was forced to stop the final clearance of the huge tree, so he returned early the next morning to find everything as it was the previous day before he had started his work. Again he set to work to clear the land, but again the work was too much for him to complete in one day. He repeated his hard work on that tree for five days. That night rather than returning home to rest he stayed and hid until a fog rolled down from the mountain and an old woman emerged who pointed a stick in the four directions and the pieces of the tree flew back to its original form. Watakame took up his axe and confronted who’s woman who he thought was a witch, and demanded to know why she was destroying his hard work.
The Goddess Nakawe, the creator of all growing things, had selected Watakame to escape the coming flood and begin human life again in the new world. Nakawe told him to build a small boat and to bring with him water, candles, fire, six of every kind of seeds including squash, beans, and corn, and to bring one companion, a small black dog.
In the fifth year, when the floodwaters receded, Watakame witnessed the recreation of the sun and all living things.
Nakawe helped Watakame find his wife by revealing that it had been the black dog who had prepared his meals since the flood, and instructed him in planting the seeds in the four directions, harvesting, and Tatewari, the God of Fire appeared, providing fire to allow him to make offerings to the Gods and to make his pilgrimages to the sacred land Wirikuta.
Nakawe told Watakame to wait until the black dog had removed her skin to bathe and that he should toss the skin into the sacred fire, but not before preparing a healing potion of tehuino and fire ashes to cure the damaged skin of the black dog who had transformed into a woman. The Huichol people are his descendants. He instructed them in the proper way of living and taught them joyful songs, prayers, and dances to please the Gods and celebrate the beautiful new world that is their home.

The HydroClean saves water and detects leaks. An independent study showed that these capabilities increased toilet flushing efficiency by 36% on average. Ordinary fill valves are miscalibrated and deliver too much water to the bowl, costing homeowners thousands of gallons of water every year. The HydroClean is the only fill valve that can be accurately calibrated to almost any toilet.

Some cool Clean Drinking Water images:
Carrying Water Home

Another consequence of the lack of having safe water available locally is the instability of villages. Every dry season, entire villages migrate with their livestock to find water. Such migration prevents the establishment of schools, health clinics, markets, and a general social infrastructure.
The challenge is enormous to those of us who uphold the sanctity of human life and the moral imperative to provide water to the thirsty. We must drill wells in local villages in Sudan. Fresh water is absolute requirement for a community’s health. It is a stable developmental platform on which a community can build its future. It is, in short, life.
Water for Sudan is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring fresh, clean water to the people of rural southern Sudan. With our new and improved drilling equipment, we now aim to drill up to 40 wells per year. As of August 2008, we have drilled 29 wells and provided over 80,000 people with uncontaminated drinking water.

Working for Water: Humanitarian need sparks soldiers’ cool solution during hot situation
Story and photo by Spec. Jason Nolte, Combined Joint Task Force-Lion Public Affairs Office
KITGUM, Uganda – Teaming up to overcome a humanitarian crisis is one of the goals of the partnership nations for Natural Fire 10. One necessity for any military exercise is water.
Before the exercise kicked off, U.S. military and East African Community partner nations worked together to ensure hundreds of soldiers staged in northern Uganda had a supply of clean water.
When water supply issues suddenly hampered several of the East African Community military camps, sergeants major from both U.S. and African contingents swung into action to do what senior non-commissioned officers do best – take care of troops. While U.S. forces are able to produce potable water, their transportation capability was somewhat limited. In stepped the Kenyans, who had two water tankers ready to go – and were among those in need of fresh water.
“It was quickly identified, and we all worked together to solve the problem by sharing resources and equipment,” said Army Capt. Christopher May, a logistical operations officer from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Special Troops Battalion.
First, both the U.S. and Kenyan contingents inspected each other’s equipment and worked to understand each other’s capabilities.
“In order to maintain clean water, its transportation has to be inspected and certified it won’t contaminate the water,” said Maj. Ken Spicer, Environmental Science Officer for the Combined Joint Task Force Lion, who inspected and certified the tankers as safe to carry drinking water. “I’ve inspected tankers like that many times in Iraq and it by far meets the standard.”
Then, Kenyan Warrant Officer 2 Ibrahim Robow and Warrant Officer 2 Francis Lumbasho toured the water purification site. Staff Sgt. McDuffie, 240th Quartermaster Company, explained the processes of a Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit. With both sides satisfied they could collaborate to deliver quality water to the troops, they loaded up the tanker with purified, drinkable water and drove it back to the camps.
Water challenges overcome, the African partner nations are focused on Natural Fire 10 – a routine, scheduled training exercise that offers an opportunity for East African Community Partner Nations and the US military to collaborate on a humanitarian assistance mission.
Working together, all parties learn from each other to increase regional capabilities to respond to complex humanitarian emergencies. The combined effort to solve the water problem has set the stage for a successful exercise and proving cooperation leads to coordination and ultimately collaboration.

If Arsenic Drinking Water Contamination Is Present – Use A Home Water Purifier
Arsenic drinking water contamination is a problem that has received a lot of attention recently. Recent studies have shown that exposure to even moderate levels of the poisonous metalloid greatly increases a person’s risk of heart disease. Here are some FAQs about the subject.
Why Is Arsenic In Water?
In some cases, it is naturally present in groundwater because of underground mineral and metal deposits. It is an element of volcanic ash, which means that surface water may be contaminated with it as well.
In fact, there is so much of the metalloid in our waters that the most common source of exposure is through eating seafood. Like mercury and other contaminants, arsenic-traces build up in the tissues and organs of fish and seafood. They build up in our bodies, too.
The compound is also found in wood preservatives, rubber, insecticides, fungicides and anti-bacterial agents. It is commonly added to animal food to prevent disease and stimulate growth. For example, about 70% of all chickens grown in the US are fed roxarsone, an arsenic-derivative.
]]>
Compounds derived from it are used in medicines, traces of which end up in our waters. It is sometimes present in plumbing fixtures and as the fixtures degrade, the poison is released into the tap-water.
To think that some amount of the poison would not be present in our freshwater and our homes is naïve. It’s everywhere.
What are the Risks of Exposure?
At high doses, it causes death. It’s a poison. Symptoms of poisoning include headache, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion and convulsions.
Contact with pesticides containing it can cause brain damage. When it becomes airborne and is inhaled, it irritates the lungs.
Consumption of small amounts over the course of one’s life increases the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. The same is true of the heavy metal lead. The long-term risks of exposure to the two are similar.
In areas where there is known to be arsenic in water supplies, the cancer rate is higher. The World Health Organization has estimated that some 57 million people are at risk, because the amount present in their drinking water is higher than 10 parts per billion, an accepted standard for safety. Other estimates say the number of people affected is closer to 80 million.
A study conducted in Wisconsin, where the natural concentration is relatively high, showed that exposure to the compound was accompanied by an increased risk of skin cancer, even at levels below 10 parts per billion. An increased risk of bladder cancer is also associated with consumption.
The concentration of arsenic in water commonly found in the US suppresses immune system function, making people more susceptible to viruses and other kinds of infections.
What Can We Do to Protect Our Families?
If poisoning is suspected, one should see a doctor immediately. Chelation therapy can remove the metalloid from the body.
To prevent poisoning and reduce the risks associated with consumption, point-of-use home water purifiers are recommended.
There are several methods that effectively address the arsenic drinking water contamination problem.
