Pakistan floods: Making water safe for drinking

Household water treatment using PUR sachets. for clearing dirty water and making it safe for drinking at household level. One sachet of PUR treats about 10 liters of water in about 30 minutes.
Straining water after PUR has been added and the solids have settled to the bottom (Note: 2 buckets and cloth for straining).
PUR sachets have a powder which contains both a flocculant and disinfectant for clearing dirty/turbid water and making it safe for drinking at household level.
The powder in the sachet is added to about 10 liters of water in a bucket, stir for 5 minutes, let the solids settle to the bottom of the bucket, strain/filter the water through a piece of cloth into another container /bucket and wait for at least 20 minutes for the disinfectant in the powder to inactivate any micro-organisms in the water. After all these steps, the water is safe for drinking.
In the first month of our humanitarian response, Oxfam reached literally hundreds of thousands of people affected by the floods with clean water, sanitation and hygiene materials, and helped local groups evacuate some 80,000 stranded people.
