The Truth About Drinking Water Contamination and Treatment
How much do you know about public drinking water contamination? A study by the Ralph Nader Research Institute has shown that drinking water in the US contains over 2100 cancer causing toxic chemicals. Contaminated tap water can be caused by many factors including run off from agriculture, industrial pollution, air pollution, household chemicals, garbage dumping and many other situations.
The one thing that all of these polluting factors have in common is that they did not occur before the settlement and industrialization of humans. Unfortunately we have been our own worst enemy when it comes to providing safe drinking water for all.
Although the government provides drinking water treatment plants, these rarely remove a large enough percentage of contaminants to be considered healthy. It is believed that the rapid rise in cancer and other illnesses can be partly attributed to the degradation of public drinking water systems and sources.
Traces of synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) are found in many water systems worldwide. These are man made chemicals that are not fit for consumption. So why do so many people ignore the facts and continue drinking unfiltered tap water?
Unfortunately many people simply are not aware that tap water is contaminated and believe that water filters are a luxury item. In fact, home water filter systems are becoming a necessity and not a luxury. They are required for good health and to avoid consuming toxic chemicals in water.
It is not just big business causing water contamination. Many contaminants can be traced back to the simple carelessness of the average home owner in the discarding of his waste. Gasoline, garden chemicals, cleaning products and other harmful substances, if not disposed of correctly, can all pollute the water system.
Our water supplies are not bullet proof and unfortunately are still vulnerable to outside chemical interference. It is little wonder that more and more people are becoming ill.
Public drinking water treatment facilities do not take away the SOCs. Most of they just use sand bed filtration as well as disinfection! This is similar to a swimming pool filter, yet we would not even consider drinking water from a swimming pool, so why risk drinking it from the faucet?
It is well known that most drinking water plants are very outdated and not fit to cope with modern day pollutants. The only way to avoid drinking harmful substances in your tap water is to fit an inexpensive home water filtration system.
