4000 gallon spill of toxic radioactive water left off of NRC event list, although they were notified of this event 2.1.2012. They did however report a much less significant 27 gal spill that occurred 2 days later at the same plant, same condensate system. Where did that 4000 gallons go? And what did it contain? UPDATE: IT ‘POSSIBLY’ WENT INTO THE GROUNDWATER! posted now under Feb 2nd (although according to plant spokesman it was reported 2.1.2012 which is more than 2 MONTHS after spill occurred) reported as follows: “Heating Steam condensate containing 9430 picocuries per liter [pCi/L] of tritium overflowed from the Main Warehouse between November 22, 2011 and November 29, 2011. The US EPA drinking water limit for tritium is 20000 pCi/L. “The Warehouse Condensate Return system failed to operate which resulted in the overflow of the Heating Steam condensate. There was a potential for the condensate to enter the environment where it could reach groundwater. The released volume for this event was conservatively calculated to be up to 3900 gallons. The 122 Condensate Return Pump was replaced and the system was restored to service. “This voluntary report is in accordance with the Nuclear Energy Institute’s Industry Ground Water Protection Initiative.” The licensee has notified the NRC Resident Inspector and will inform state and local agencies of this event. Apparently this release only contained tritium? Although the 27 gal release from the same condensate included 3 other …
On June 29th, 2000, Dr. William Hirzy was invited to give testimony to the US Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water on behalf of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) Chapter 280 – US Environmental Protection Agency, National Headquarters. At the time, Dr. Hirzy was serving his sixth term as the Senior Vice-President of the Union. His presentation that day was, “Why EPA’s Union of Professionals Opposes Fluoridation.” This is a video that documents the presentation along with interviews with Dr. Hirzy where he describes the reasoning behind the professional and official stance of his Union members in direct opposition to the EPA’s administrative support of fluoridation. The content of this presentation is a real eye opener. It and other papers of concern from the Union can be viewed in text form at: www.nteu280.org Dr. William Hirzy is a chemist in residence and adjunct professor in the Department of Chemistry at the American University in Washington, DC. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Missouri. Dr. Hirzy has served as the Senior Scientist for Risk Assessment for the US Environmental Protection Agency from 1981 to 2004 where he authored, “Principles of Scientific Integrity,” adopted as EPA’s code of professional ethics, November, 1999. He has published numerous papers on fluoride, fluoridation, and many other toxicological profiles of chemicals in the environment. He has also served as …
