We are in the year 2070. I just turned 50 years old, but I look 85. I experience major kidney problems, because I drink very little water. I think that I don’t have much more time to live. Today, I am the oldest person living in this society. I remember, when I was 5 years old.. There were lots of trees in the parks, houses had beautiful gardens, and I could enjoy long baths and stay in the shower for one whole hour..everything was very different. Now, we have to clean ourselves by using disposable towelettes moisturized with mineral oil. Before, women were proud of their beautiful hair. Before, my father used to wash his car with water that came out of a hose. Today, children find it hard to believe that one ever could use water to perfom such a task. Now, we have to shave our head to keep it clean without using water. I remember the many warnings: “DON’T WASTE WATER” But nobody paid attention. People assumed that water was unlimited. Today, rivers, dams, lagoons, and under-ground water are all either irremediably polluted or completely dried up. The landscape that surrounds us has turned into nothing more than an immense desert. Gastro-intestinal infections, and skin and urinary tract diseases have now become the main causes of death. Industry is paralysed, and the jobless rate reached a dramatic level. Water purification technology has advanced tremendously in the past few years, particularly in the area of home filtration systems. Here’s a brief look at some of the different methods of water purification available today.

Distillation is very old water purification technology, but it is still commonly used. It was first developed, not as one of the methods of water purification, but to create alcohol. In archaeological excavations from Pakistan to South Asia, alcohol distillers have been found. A simple explanation of the process follows.

Liquid is brought to a boil and it vaporizes. The vapor travels through a tube, where it enters another chamber, cools down and once again becomes a liquid. Anything that has a higher boiling point than the liquid or cannot be vaporized in the steam remains in the first pot.

This is one of the methods of water purification that leaves the minerals behind and causes an acid pH. It has been learned that for drinking purposes, de-mineralization and acid pH levels are not healthy.

Advancements in water purification technology have aimed at removing chemical and biological contaminants, without destroying the natural mineral content and pH level.

Reverse osmosis is often touted as the latest in water purification technology, when in fact it has been around for at least 50 years. It was developed for use in industries and large scale treatment facilities. In the 1970s, it became popularized as one of the healthiest methods of water purification for the home.

It was truly a boon to water purification technology, since it can be used to remove salt. In coastal areas and island communities, this is an important and desirable feature. Basically, it works by pressurizing and forcing liquids through a porous membrane. The size of the pores determines what is removed and what travels through.

RO is another of the methods of water purification that de-mineralizes, so not the healthiest for drinking. There are several other disadvantages to the system. It creates wastewater that cannot be used for drinking or other purposes. It operates slowly and requires electrical energy.

Chemical contaminants, such as we face today are not removed. And, additional steps are required to remove bacteria and bacterial cysts. For home purifiers, water purification technology has advanced beyond this method.

In most of our homes, the liquid that flows from our kitchen taps has been through a number of methods of water purification. Treatment facilities vary, but depending on where you live, the methods of water purification used by major facilities include RO, membrane and ultra-filtration, flocculation, UV radiation and, of course, chemical disinfection.

The use of chemicals to kill bacteria and disinfect was, at the turn of the century, a major leap forward in water purification technology.

Before its introduction, there were numerous outbreaks of cholera, typhoid and other diseases relating to bacterial contamination. It appears that what was good for our society in general was bad for the health of the individual.

One of the chemicals most commonly used for disinfection is chlorine. When it is used at the treatment facility, other chemical by-products (THMs) are released. Both, THMs and chlorine, as well as their gases and vapors, have been linked to cancer and a variety of other health problems.

New advancements in water purification technology for the home are aimed at removing those threats. One of the best methods of water purification for this purpose is carbon filtration.

Chemicals and other contaminants stick to the filter, making the output safer to drink. This method also removes odor and improves taste. Most of the newest home purifiers make use of this technology.

Huelgoat is popular with tourists and holidaymakers due to its impressive natural setting among the vestiges of the ancient forest that once covered inland Brittany. Once part of royal and ducal lands, the forest is now overseen by the French forestry commission, the Office National des Forêts. It has an area of 10 square kilometres. A large replanting scheme has repaired much of the damage sustained by the forest in storms on the 15th-16th October 1987, when 3.1 square kilometres of trees were levelled or damaged.

The village lies on a lake created between the 16th and 18th centuries to supply water to local silver-lead mines by means of a 3 km leat or canal.

More fun with Photoshop and using the Transformation > Distort utility stitching these two images together. There are still some distortions, but finding the seam where the two images overlap is really hard. This is taking me back to the days of working with a view camera and using the swings and tilts to adjust for perspective.

The subject here is a construction project on the back porch were I’m pulling out a bunch of water damaged drywall to finish a project I started a while back to turn the porch into a pantry. It was kind of cool to discover the original lap siding of the house under the drywall.

A huge unintentional waste of water is when people water part of their grass, and their sidewalk or driveway because of improperly positioned sprinklers.  This can misuse up to five hundred gallons a month.  Also, overwatering is a problem.  If your grass springs back after you step on it, it doesn’t need to be watered.  Using a hose to water your lawn or garden instead of sprinklers is another way to save as much as fifteen hundred gallons a month.  Or if you don’t really like having grass, convert you lawn into plants native to the area so you don’t have to water at all.  If you need to clean your sidewalks or driveway, using a broom to do so can save more than a hundred and fifty gallons each time.  Another hundred and fifty gallons can be saved each time you wash your car if you use a bucket and sponge to do so and only turn on the hose to rinse at the end.

How many people turn on the faucet and wait for the water to warm up?  Filling a bucket with that extra water can be helpful later for watering houseplants or outdoors on your lawn.  As small a step as this may seem to be, it can save up to three hundred gallons a month.  Most people have heard that shortening their showers can save on water, but did you know that even a two minute reduction can save up to seven hundred gallons a month?  Save even more by installing water-conscious shower heads.

Another small change that makes a large difference is fixing any leaks in your plumbing.  You can save up to six hundred gallons a month for each leaky faucet you fix.  Another six hundred gallons can be saved by not using the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.  When was the last time you ran just one item in the laundry?  Running full loads only in the dishwasher and washing machine can have a big impact, upwards of eight hundred gallons a month.  It doesn’t take a lot of changes in your lifestyle to make a lot of difference in the amount of water you conserve.  Not only will you be ensuring there is enough water for the whole community, but you will also be lowering your own water and electricity bills at the same time.  Why not conserve water?
